A PART-TIME UMPIRE WON THE MOST-WATCHED ULTRAMARATHON EVER
Mark Dowdle didn’t take the traditional path to becoming a professional ultra-runner.
After leaving his full-time job in 2023 to pursue running, he spent 10 months trying to make it work. When that plan didn’t come together, he adapted, working multiple part-time jobs as an umpire, window cleaner, and event setup worker while continuing to chase the goal.
That same resilience eventually led him to BPN.
KEEP GOING.
At the BPN Backyard Ultra, Mark found himself more than 50 hours into the race with only a handful of runners remaining.
The course was destroyed. His body was exhausted. The doubts started coming. At one point, he laid down on the course and asked himself a simple question:
Would the version of me tomorrow respect the effort I gave if I stopped now?
The answer was clear. Get up. Keep going.
Mark eventually won after running for 73 hours and 306 miles, earning his place on Team USA for Big's Backyard Ultra.
But the victory wasn't just about the miles.
THE WORK NO ONE SEES.
Mark's success was built on years of work that happened long before anyone was watching.
Training. Failing. Adapting. Showing up.
He credits strength and stability training with helping him handle the physical demands of backyard ultras, where the body breaks down over days of continuous effort.
For Mark, the goal has never simply been to win.
It's to find out what he's capable of, and keep pushing that answer further.
KEEP FINDING OUT.
Mark's story is a reminder that the path doesn't have to be perfect.
You might have to change the plan. You might have to start with one mile. You might even have to keep going when you already believe failure is inevitable.
The question is whether you keep showing up.
Because you never know what you're capable of until you find out.
